Are you an experienced financial accountant who can hit the ground running in a complex government entity? Do you thrive under pressure, challenge the status quo, and enjoy driving continuous improvement? This could be the opportunity for you.

Our state government client is seeking an AO7 Principal Financial Accountant to join their team. This role will commence as a 6-month assignment and, as the position is currently vacant, there is potential for extension or an opportunity to apply for the permanent role.

Your New Role
  
As the Principal Financial Accountant, you will play a lead role in delivering statutory financial reporting, governance, and financial assurance activities.

Reporting directly to the Head of Finance, you will provide expert financial accounting advice while supporting the organisation through ongoing finance system improvements and operational change.

Your Key Contributions
  • Lead the preparation of annual financial statements and associated reporting requirements
  • Manage QAO audit coordination, assurance statements, and compliance activities
  • Prepare position papers, including right-of-use asset accounting documentation
  • Support governance, financial controls, and Financial Management Practice Manual activities
  • Contribute to Treasury reporting, month-end processes, and reconciliations
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives and identify operational efficiencies
  • Support and provide oversight to Finance Operations staff
  • Foster a high-performing, curious, and improvement-focused team culture
  • Provide expert advice to senior stakeholders on financial accounting matters
What You’ll Need to Succeed
  • A proactive mindset with the confidence to challenge processes and drive improvement
  • Demonstrated experience in financial accounting within Queensland Government or a statutory body (highly desirable)
  • Strong understanding of Queensland Treasury and QAO reporting requirements (highly desirable)
  • Proven experience preparing financial statements and managing audit processes (highly desirable)
  • Ability to work autonomously and perform effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with TechnologyOne (beneficial)
  • CA or CPA qualifications (highly regarded)
