If you’re a financial accountant who thrives on complex reporting, audit leadership, and technical challenge, this contract gives you the opportunity to step into a high-impact Principal role within a large Queensland State Government organisation.

Your Impact in the Role:
As the Principal Financial Accountant, you’ll lead the preparation of statutory financial statements, oversee compliance with accounting standards, and provide expert advice on complex accounting matters. You’ll also support audit processes and mentor others within the finance function.

What Will Set You Up for Success:
  • Lead preparation of annual statutory financial statements.
  • Ensure compliance with Australian Accounting Standards and financial legislation.
  • Coordinate and support external audit activities, including QAO audits.
  • Deliver accurate monthly and year-end financial reporting.
  • Prepare complex journals, reconciliations, and financial disclosures.
  • Interpret new accounting standards and provide technical advice to senior management.
  • Prepare briefing papers, position papers, and responses to audit or ministerial requests.
  • Support the day-to-day operations of the Financial Accounting team.
  • Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, and reporting frameworks.
  • Build strong working relationships across finance teams and key stakeholders.
What Will Set You Up for Success
  • Extensive experience in financial accounting, ideally in a large or complex organisation.
  • Proven experience preparing annual statutory financial statements.
  • Strong working knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards and financial reporting requirements.
  • Experience preparing movement schedules, reconciliations, and supporting disclosures.
  • Ability to provide clear, defensible technical accounting advice.
  • Strong communication skills and confidence working with senior stakeholders.
Highly Regarded:
  • Professional accounting qualification (CPA, CA, or IPA).
  • Experience in public sector or government financial reporting environments.
